A small plane crashed near a suburban Dallas airport on Friday afternoon, killing one person onboard and leaving a second seriously injured.

The two-seater Cessna 150 crashed around 4 p.m. as it departed from the Mesquite Municipal Airport, said Roland Herwig, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

One person died on impact and the second was rushed to a hospital in serious condition. Officials say there was no else on board.

The plane went down just west of the airport, which is less than 20 miles east of downtown Dallas. It was unclear where the plane was headed, Herwig said.

Investigators with the FAA were expected to arrive at the crash site Friday night, followed by officials from the National Transportation Safety Board on Saturday, Herwig said.
