Part of a Newark Liberty International Airport terminal was evacuated Saturday as authorities investigated a possible gas leak, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said.

People in a section of the airport's Terminal B noticed a strong odor around 11 a.m. that they thought smelled like natural gas, Port Authority spokesman Pasquale DiFulco said.

Emergency workers treated 11 people complaining of symptoms related to the odor, including one person who fainted, fire department spokesman John Brown said. One person was taken to a hospital, he said.

The section of the terminal with the odor was evacuated as police and the Newark Fire Department investigated. Some arriving flights were diverted to another part of the terminal.

The evacuation did not affect flight schedules, DiFulco said.

Utility workers from Public Service Electric & Gas had been called in, Brown said. A message left with the utility's media relations office was not immediately returned.
