A noose was found pinned to the door of a black professor at Columbia University’s Teachers College, according to reports on Tuesday.
The incident is being investigated by the New York City Police Department’s Hate Crimes Task Force, the Columbia University Spectator reported.
"The TC community and I deplore this hateful act, which violates every Teachers College and societal norm," Teachers College President Susan Fuhrman said in an e-mailed statement.
The incident comes in the wake of recent protests and violence in Jena, Louisiana, when white students hung nooses from a tree one day after six black students sat under it.
Columbia University made headlines two weeks ago after the school allowed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to speak on campus.
