Indianapolis Metropolitan Police fatally shot a 22-year-old man wielding a machete early Saturday morning after they answered 911 calls about a violent domestic dispute.

Police found Dwayne Vonessen brandishing a machete and possibly a hatchet when they arrived around 3:10 a.m. at a South Pennsylvania Avenue location, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Sgt. Paul Thompson said.

Vonessen kept walking toward officers and ignored commands to drop his weapons and stop. He was shot once in the chest and died about 45 minutes later, after a rescue crew took him to Wishard Memorial Hospital.

Before officers arrived, dispatchers received two calls warning them that Vonessen had threatened to kill any cops who came to the scene, Thompson said. He said police hear threats like that "every once in a while."

"Nine times out of 10, things change when we show up but not in this case," Thompson said. "This guy apparently meant to carry out his threat."
