Canadian scientists say they have discovered a gene that can stop cancerous cells from multiplying into tumors in various forms of the disease including breast, lung and liver, the Globe and Mail reported.

The HACE 1 gene aids in fighting off stress that unheeded can lead to tumors. The scientists said cancerous cells form tumors when the gene is inactive and additional stress causes rampant tumor growth.

The finding is detailed in the journal Nature Medicine.
