The latest weird and wacky news from around the world:
Try telling 94-year-old University of Adelaide graduate Phyllis Turner that an old “dog” can’t learn new “tricks!” Turner recently received her master’s degree in medical science, which appears to qualify her for the Guinness World Record title of world’s oldest recipient of a master’s degree. Her academic supervisor said of her accomplishment, “People survive to 101 but rarely with a mind so young.” Turner quit school at age 12 in order to help her mother raise her siblings after her father left the family. She decided to crack the books again at age 70, and she may not be through with school yet; “The only trouble is, I’m short of years,” she said.
Have no fear — Batman is…rescued? Batman, Robin, Superman and Spiderman were headed to a travel show…well, four friends dressed up as Batman, Robin, Superman and Spiderman were headed to a travel show when their car got a flat tire. Luckily for the group, Highways Agency staff helped them out on the M40 in Bucks, England. Paul Wood, who was dressed up in Superman garb, said what was on everyone’s mind, “You’d have thought between us we could have picked the car up and flown it away.”
Ever heard the saying, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch?” Well, a Boise woman recently learned that “there’s no such thing as a free iPod!” The woman answered a Craiglist ad for a free iPod, but became suspicious when the “seller” suggested she pick up the gadget in a portable toilet at a sports complex…at 10:30 pm. She contacted police, who found the man waiting in his car at the sports complex wearing a black stocking cap. Police say a knife, BB gun and gloves were found in his car. The 32-year-old man, Stephen Newman, has been arrested on misdemeanor charges, as no crime appeared to have been committed.
