PHILADELPHIA – Investigators say what started out as a robbery turned into a kidnapping on Tuesday when suspects abducted and tortured the owner of a club in West Philadelphia.
Sgt. Charles Layton said a group of masked men burst into Club William Penn on Tuesday, fired shots and kidnapped the owner, Clinton Horritt.
The suspects duct-taped Horritt, locked him in the basement and called his family to demand a ransom of $450,000.
Horritt was shot in the leg and stabbed but freed himself from the duct tape, broke a window with his hands, climbed out and limped to a neighbor's home to ask for help, Layton said.
The suspects fled in a white van.
Horritt is hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
