GEORGETOWN, Ind. – A 15-year-old boy shot two sheriff's deputies outside his southern Indiana home on Monday and authorities were searching for him more than three hours later, authorities said.
Officers were searching a half-mile area around the home for the boy, said Lt. Frank Loop of Floyd County Sheriff's Department.
Both wounded officers were taken to a Louisville, Ky., hospital, but Loop did not give details on their injuries.
The deputies went to the home in a rural subdivision about 10 miles west of Louisville on a report of a confrontation between the boy and his mother, Loop said.
The two deputies were not able to defend themselves, said a neighbor who saw the shooting but requested anonymity because of safety concerns.
"No one was ready for it," he told The Associated Press. "The cops didn't have a chance to pull their guns."
Numerous police agencies were at the scene and the road leading to the subdivision was blocked as authorities evacuated about 25 houses nearby homes.
The injured deputies were Frank Denzinger, a four-year veteran of the department, and Joel White, who has been with the department 17 months, Loop said.
The neighbor said the boy also fired at his mother after shooting the deputies, but missed. Loop said the boy's mother was not injured.
The neighbor said the boy's mother had recently caught him with marijuana and that the teen tried to kill himself because of it.
