A New Jersey Transit commuter bus crashed into the center divider of Interstate 495 near the Lincoln Tunnel Friday night, causing major traffic delays.

The accident occurred at 7:30 p.m. and involved a bus bound for Paterson from the Port Authority Terminal in midtown Manhattan, said Dan Stessel, a spokesman for NJ Transit.

Stessel did not have immediate information on injuries or how fast the bus was traveling when it struck the divider, although part of the bus lifted off the roadway on impact, he said.

Emergency crews from NJ Transit and the Port Authority police responded, he said.
