Caroline Eldridge dedicated her life to the study of Da Vinci but her mind was "muddled" by the mysteries surrounding the painter's life, the woman's father told the Daily Mail.
"She was very fearful for her own safety and she felt that because of the work she had been doing and because of the knowledge that she had, she had put us in danger," her father told the Daily Mail.
After moving to Italy to more closely study Da Vinci's life, Eldridge started to have paranoid delusions that she was going to be murdered for "knowledge that she had" of Da Vinci, her father said.
She eventually told her family, "I'm not going to let them take me alive," before she overdosed on the painkiller paracetamol, the Mail reported.
The Da Vinci Code, which has sold more than 60 million copies, tells the story of a Catholic organization's plan to kill Robert Langdon, who, through clues in Da Vinci's paintings, is close to discovering that Christ married Mary Magdalene and fathered a son with her.
