More than 10,000 people in Iraq's Interior Ministry have been fired or reassigned as the nation's Shiite-led government struggles to clean up its security forces under U.S. pressure, USA Today reported Monday.
Among the ousted employees are police who were found to have tortured prisoners, ministry spokesman Jassim Hanoon told the paper. Around half of those reassigned or fired have militia ties.
Results of an internal inquiry detail 41 incidents of human rights abuses, including beating prisoners with sticks at a ministry-run prison known as Site 4, the paper reported.
The ministry employs around 270,000 people.
