Not much going on this weekend in Washington. It’s bitterly cold, the Pelosi All-Star team will be in Baghdad and we have to wait another week until the Super Bowl. It’s just going to be me and the wife, the kids, the dog… and some 300,000 Anti-War Activists who are planning to march on the Mall.
I live for moments like these. If you thought the peace marches of the sixties and seventies were gone – you were DEAD wrong. A group called United for Peace is leading a rally tomorrow led by Jane Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Danny Glover and Jesse Jackson. (I gather Sean Penn wasn’t available or didn’t get invited.) And I am not clear on whether my favorite Peace Mom Cindy Sheehan is coming.
Since I last covered the movement, the Democrats were just taking office and vowing to bring a lot of pressure on the President to end the war in Iraq. But to date, the Democrats have proved less effective than some might have hoped for having only passed a non-binding resolution through the Senate Foreign Relations Committee condemning the war. Apparently too, that resolution could possibly undermine the morale of the troops who are headed into the fight as part of the “troop surge.” (Although it is worth noting that they have successfully turned Republican Sen Chuck Hagel into an anti-war spokesman.)
What I really want to know is this: Do they want America to prevail in Iraq?
One thing President Bush made clear in his State of the Union speech was that no one wants America to lose the war in Iraq. We lost the war in Vietnam and now some four decades later we are faced with a similar question of what to do when things are not going well. Only this time, we have the benefit of 20/20 hindsight and can be aware of the damage that a loss can have on the nation as a whole.
Of course, I am also curious to find out if Danny Glover has spent any more time with his Venezuelan pal Hugo Chavez? And I’d really like to know from Jane Fonda what it’s like working with Monster-In-Law Co-Star J Lo – the woman with the sexiest derriere on Earth?
And being the “company man” that I am, I think I’ll wear a FOX News hat and do the former NYC Mayor Koch routine and ask people, “How are we doing?”
As a public service announcement, I should mention that if you are coming out to attend the march – United for Peace’s website offers the following advice:
Weather:Predicted to be 48 F and sunny! However, because there might be some precipitation in Washington, DC, before Saturday, the Mall could be a little muddy. So you may wish to wear boots, or at least bring an extra pair of socks.
I hope to see all of you there!
