The state's mine safety chief says two coal miners were killed in a roof collapse in southern West Virginia.

The miners became trapped around 10:30 a.m. at the Brooks Run mine in McDowell County, said Paul Butler, a county 911 dispatcher. He had no other details.

Dispatchers said the accident scene was up to 1 1/2 miles beyond the entrance to the mine.

A year ago, an explosion killed 12 men at the Sago Mine in Upshur County. Also last January, two miners died in a fire at the Aracoma Alma No. 1 Mine in Logan County.
