A 25-car pileup on an icy, foggy interstate before dawn Wednesday killed one person and shut down a nearly 30-mile stretch of the road for hours, a highway official said.

Investigators believe the pileup may have started with a hit-and-run crash. It began in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10, about 90 miles east of El Paso, Texas Department of Public Safety communications officer Julian Nyda said. He had no details on the death.

The area received a light dusting of snow Tuesday, and transportation officials reported ice on the interstate Wednesday morning.

The freeway was moving slowly in both directions by late Wednesday morning.
