Violence flared across southern Afghanistan on Friday with seven suspected insurgents being killed and a U.S.-coalition soldier wounded in one clash, the American military said. A rocket also impacted near Canadian troops but caused no casualties.

Coalition warplanes, mortar fire and small arms were used against suspected insurgents, killing seven, in the Kandahar district of Sperwan Ghar, the U.S. military said in a statement.

One soldier was wounded in the battle, but his nationality was not released.

Separately in the Kandahar town of Panjwayi, insurgents fired a rocket near Canadian troops based in the area, but the attack caused no casualties, according to an Associated Press reporter embedded with the troops.
