More than 60 million bottles of the new vintage of Beaujolais, Beaujolais Nouveau, made a global dash on Thursday, arriving on liquor shelves right on schedule. A French law passed in 1985 prohibits it from being distributed any earlier than the third Thursday of the eleventh month. The young red wine was made from grapes that were hanging on the vine just three months ago.
Wine lovers worldwide hold celebrations and wine tastings to welcome the vintage.
Franck Duboeuf, director general of France's Vins George Duboeuf, celebrated the event in New York with a public tasting of his 2006 Beaujolais Nouveau.
Some of the top producers of Beaujolais and Beaujolais Nouveau include: Georges Duboeuf, Domaine Yvon Metras, Jean-Paul Thevenet, and Louis Jadot. Now the race is on to see whose Beaujolais Nouveau will be the first to fill the bars and restaurants awaiting the grape gold.
