I've got to let you in on a little secret, our show has the best, most dedicated fans in all of TV land! And I should know, because I've been meeting a lot of you over the past week, as I travel around talking about my new book "The Mr. and Mrs. Happy Handbook", which I'm proud to say has been the number one humor book in America for two weeks, and is now a New York Times best seller, thanks entirely to you!
When we sit in the New York studios, we sometimes have a picture in our heads of what the people who are watching look like. Of course it is early morning, and I do imagine many of our viewers are wearing pajamas, while Brian thinks more in terms of lingerie. But when you go out on the road, you start to see what the friends of "Fox & Friends" look like.
In Tampa/St. Pete's Beach we were shocked at the sheer size of the number of people who drove out to the Don Cesar resort at 5 am ET, to be poolside as we did our program live as part of the "Thank You America" tour. It's funny, we were there to say "thank you" to our viewers, but so many viewers came to say "thank you" to us! They'd say "thanks for being so funny" or "friendly" or "real" or "honest."
When I went to Memphis, and visited the Davis-Kidd bookstore, I was struck at the HUNDREDS of people who on a Friday night (America's Date night) would skip their dinners and movies to patiently stand in line and wait to hear this lanky guy from Kansas talk about the funny parts of marriage!
Nashville, the same thing, HUNDREDS took numbers and stood in line, just to shake my hand, buy my book, and tell me why they watch FOX News. They all shared with me, their marriage stories, and one of the first things they'd say would be the number of years they'd been married! "Forty two years, Steve!" They'd say it as a good way to start the conversation, but also, proudly stating that theyd' made it that far, so far. I also visited the American Cancer Society there, and had a lovely morning with the staff and some patients as well. I do love Tennessee.
In Carle Place, New York, the second floor of the Barnes & Noble was filled with people who'd come to greet me and my TV brother, Brian Kilmeade. Brian was so sweet to come after a grueling two hour practice with his soccer team (see photo in gallery) and I can't thank him enough for his support. Rather than just thank him, I offered him a piece of cake. What cake you ask? Only the most incredible cakes I'd ever seen, it was brought to the store by a woman named Ada Brett Mulligan, who has a cake business in Glen Head, New York called "I Ada Cake", (say it to yourself and you'll see it's a funny word play). She came with her family to present me with a cake that looked exactly like my book! It brought tears to my eyes. When I asked her how long it took and she said, "the last two days". And it really did. You can see a snapshot in the photo gallery on the side of this page.
In Wyckoff and Ridgewood, New Jersey, the people looked familiar, probably because I've seen them for the last dozen years at church and the kid's schools and various other events. A friend of mine, who's helping me coordinate my schedule said "You don't have to wait for your funeral to see who your friends are, they're all here!" And he was right.
There were two people in Ridgewood at BookEnds that really made the night special. One young man asked me to write something special to his girlfriend, actually he asked me to write a marriage proposal inside the book, he was going to pop the question the next Saturday night, and he wanted to do it with my book!
And then there was Joyce De Jong from Dyer, Indiana, who really wanted to come to meet me, but there are no book signings scheduled in Indiana. So she got up at 4:30 am on Thursday morning and drove ALL DAY. She got to New Jersey twelve hours later. She did get the best seat in the house and she was first on line. She was not going to say anything about the long drive, until I asked her where she was from, and when she told me, I couldn't believe it! She'd dragged her grandson along, and he verified the story. There is a photograph of Joyce and her grandson and myself in the photo gallery.
Whether it's driving all day, and then all night, or spending two days in the kitchen baking a cake, I am touched by your dedication!
Really what I have learned after my two weeks of traveling around the country meeting the Friends of "FOX & Friends," is that there are a lot of you out there, and you are really wonderful people with hearts of gold. I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed our visits, and now when I say "Good morning" on the television, I have a collective flash of the faces I've seen across the country, knowing they're starting their days with their pajamas and coffee and us!
For that, I am eternally grateful.
And for the hundreds of fans who are sending me their reviews of my book to happy@foxnews.com , thank you.
