Israeli troops killed a Palestinian militant during a raid in this West Bank town on Wednesday, Palestinian and Israeli officials said.

Palestinian officials said Mujahid Akram al-Saba, 27, of the Islamic Jihad militant group, was fatally shot shortly after Israeli troops entered Jenin. The shooting sparked fierce gunbattles, which continued to rage Wednesday afternoon.

Bushra el-Saba, the militant's mother, said masked soldiers in civilian clothes burst into the family home looking for her son, who escaped through a second-floor window onto the roof of a neighboring house. Witnesses said undercover soldiers in a white pickup truck outside gunned him down as he tried to escape.

The Israeli army said soldiers tried to arrest al-Saba, shooting him when he tried to escape and ignored calls to halt.
