Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian male near Gaza's border with Israel early Thursday, Palestinian hospital officials said.

The army said the Palestinian approached a border fence in central Gaza and was warned repeatedly before opening fire. The army said the Palestinian was carrying a suspicious bag with wires sticking out, but it was unclear whether he was armed.

Palestinian hospital officials said the unidentified Palestinian, whose body was riddled with bullets, was believed to be between 15 and 20 years old. It was not clear why he was near the border fence.

On Wednesday, the army said it shot two armed Palestinians trying to infiltrate Israel from Gaza. It later turned over the body of one dead militant.

Israel has been waging an offensive in Gaza since Hamas-backed militants captured an Israeli soldier in a June 25 cross-border raid. Hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in the offensive, many of them gunmen.
