So a bunch of you out there have been screaming at me for my opinion on the French headbutt in the World Cup.
I said something along the lines of: What are you all getting so excited for? The French player Zidane got insulted and he thumped the guy who dissed him. It wasn't much more than what goes on in any number of NBA or NFL or major league games, and the whole world is dizzy with vapors.
Not me. I thought it was a bit out of line, worthy of getting kicked out of the game, certainly, but no biggie basically.
Wednesday the French player, Zidane, said the insult was nothing to do with being the son of a terrorist — that was the first report — but was nonetheless an insult to his sister and mother.
I thought the Italian guy deserved it. Many of you were horrified I'd say such a thing.
Well, I'm going to say it again. I thought the Frenchie was wrong with the headbutt, but wrong in a zone that I would describe as not unexpected and still no biggie.
I don't want kids doing it, but this is big league soccer, not some Saturday afternoon exercise for the tots.
On top of everything else, we've been calling the French guys cheese-eating surrender monkeys for all these years. Don't we owe it to a Frenchie for doing the right thing? I think we do, and I for one am ready to step up.
Congrats to the Frenchie Zidane.
It was wrong to headbutt, but not so wrong I'd kick him around about it.
