A quick blog today, since much of the day is going to be spent packing, reading research for the week and traveling — but the travel does not start until late in the day. "On the Record" is "on the road" this week: in London. We are going to London to cover the one-year anniversary of the terrorist bombings that struck that beautiful city. We have a number of special things planned for you.
It is so easy to think that only the United States was hit by terrorists — since who could ever forget Sept 11! But London got hit, too (as have other parts of the world). While London's death toll was less than 60 — compared to our approximate 3,000 — it was a huge and well-coordinated attack on that city. London got lucky its death toll was only about 55 — although that is still 55 too many.
Of course the ugly reality is that London — and other parts of the world — could get attacked again, so we all have to be vigilant at all times. You may recall that London's attack consisted of suicide bombers in their subway system and on a bus.
I have been teased by many friends for going to England on the 4th of July, but this was/is an important story. And, of course, England was very good to us in the wake of September 11 and continues to be the good friend, as it has been for a long time. We want to make sure they know we care... and that we are covering their terrorism attack.
Our show airs at 3 a.m. London time (10 p.m. ET), so our days will be long — but we are up for the challenge. We have all learned the power of catnaps and we are there only for one week. No sleep for this short period of time will not kill us. Imagine working in an ER or ICU where you never get sleep... or being in the battlefield.
We are also used to switching gears — in other words, if something happens back here in the United States, we will still cover those stories as well. We will be in constant communication with FOX headquarters in New York City and we are armed with laptops and cell phones to learn any other news that might arise. And, of course, all my sources have my cell phone numbers and my cell phone will work in London.
We needed to make the trip to London so that we could take you to various places and show you different things. We could not cover the story as well if we stayed here in the USA this week.

Greta,
I got the biggest kick out of watching the Japanese prime minister at Graceland today. As an Elvis fan myself, it was refreshing to be reminded of how many hearts and souls the man touched throughout the entire world with his incredible voice and music. Plus it was just nice to see two world leaders have somewhat normal fun.

Hey Greta!
I’m almost always in your corner, but I was dismayed that you made a commercial-break tease out of the Ocean City, Maryland boy’s death. To say there were new developments seems like a pretty insignificant tease when the poor boy had died. Please ask your staff that helps write your script to take into account the fact that it was unseemly to use a death as a tease, especially when you didn’t even say that he had died.

I have such sympathy for Mary Winkler. In (aprox.) 1976 in Chapel Hill N.C. my good friend was in a similar situation. Her husband absolutely mentally abused her until she snapped. She ended up shooting and killing him with a shotgun as well. She also had two children. Her church spoke up in her behalf and she was eventually cleared of the charges. She may have had probation, but never served time. I hope this is the case for Mary Winkler. Seeing it first hand, I understand how this can happen. I hope you can pass this on to her defense.
