Murder Suspect Recaptured After D.C. Jail Break

WASHINGTON – Police on Sunday recaptured one of two murder suspects who escaped a Washington, D.C., jail, U.S. marshals said.

Joseph Leaks, 32, was discovered at a Virginia hotel around 2 a.m. and taken back into custody by U.S. marshals after he and suspect Ricardo Jones, 25, escaped by breaking a window at the D.C. Jail on Saturday morning. Jones still was at large as of Sunday afternoon.

"This was not an easy task to accomplish," said Devon Brown, director of the D.C. Department of Corrections, referring to the escape.

The jail was put on lockdown after the incident.

An officer arriving for work unsuccessfully chased the two men, losing track of them in the area of a Metro Station not far from RFK Stadium.

Jones last was seen near the jail at 19th Street and Independence Avenue, SE.

Both men were wearing blue prison jumpsuits at the time of their escape.

Jones and Leaks were awaiting trial for a shooting last July. Jones was charged with first-degree murder while armed in that case and Leaks was charged as an accessory in that case.

The two also are wanted in North Carolina for allegedly shooting a security officer in Greensboro, authorities said.
