WINDHOEK, Namibia – Mother and child are doing well, a doctor at the hospital where Angelina Jolie gave birth to a daughter said Sunday, adding that there were no complications during the closely guarded delivery.
News of her birth came from Los Angeles, where Brad Pitt's publicist announced that the couple had named the child Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt but said no other information or photographs would be released.
Officials in Namibia — where the couple holed up at a luxury resort after news of the birth garnered an onslaught of media attention — refused Sunday to provide any details about the birth.
"There is nothing I can say so far except any information relating to the birth of the baby will be made available to the public soon," said Samuel Nuuyoma, governor of the Namibian region of Erongo.
He said he could only confirm the birth of a baby girl at the Welwitschia Clinic in Walvis Bay.
But a doctor at the hospital told The Associated Press there were no complications, and that the mother and child were doing well.
"She is a healthy baby," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release information. He declined to provide other details.
Police ringed the hospital and refused to admit journalists and photographers into the building.
Jolie also has two adopted children: toddler Zahara, from Ethiopia, and 4-year-old Maddox, from Cambodia.
