Deadwood wants to be a little more like Pamplona. This town of approximately 1,380 is taking a page from the Spanish city and considering a proposal to run bison through its downtown next year.

John Boyer, an attorney representing a group called Running the Bison in Deadwood, asked the Deadwood city commission to approve a special-event permit for July 21-22, 2007.

Organizers want to use the event to promote the growing bison industry and the sales of bison meat. They say it could become an annual event.

A plan outlined in November would feature five bison bulls that would be herded down a fenced-in section of Deadwood's Main Street. They'd be joined by people on foot, similar to the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

A special hearing considering the proposal will be held on May 30.
