A mother said "demons" told her to kill her 9-month-old baby and stab her 3-year-old daughter, seriously wounding the toddler, police said Saturday.

Liset Hernandez, 36, was arrested and charged with one count of first degree murder and one count of aggravated child abuse, Miami Detective Delrish Moss said.

"She confessed totally to the murder and the child abuse, citing that demons made her do it," Moss said.

It was not immediately known if Hernandez was taking any medications or had a history of mental illness, he said.

Hernandez's husband, Israel, who was on a business trip, panicked Friday night when he came home to a dark, messy apartment and could not find his family, Moss said. Israel Hernandez then sought a nearby officer for help searching the apartment.

The officer found the dead infant on top of the bathroom sink, wrapped in a white sheet, Moss said. The baby girl sustained multiple injuries, authorities said without elaborating.

The officer then discovered Liset Hernandez in a closet holding the injured 3-year-old. Both were covered in blood, Moss said.

The toddler suffered multiple stab wounds and remained hospitalized Saturday afternoon in serious condition at Jackson Memorial Children's Hospital, authorities said.

Hernandez was being held without bond at a county jail.
