Three people died Sunday when their plane crashed and sparked a fire at the Gainesville Regional Airport, authorities said.

The aircraft crashed shortly before noon into a sport utility vehicle parked outside the airport, sending the vehicle through a terminal wall, said Sgt. Keith Kameg, spokesman for the Gainesville Police Department.

Approximately 100 to 150 people were inside the terminal when the crash occurred, but no other injuries were reported, Kameg said. The identities of the three people killed in the crash were not released.

The terminal was evacuated, and the airport was closed Sunday afternoon, police said. A message left for an airport spokeswoman was not immediately returned.

Details about the aircraft and whether it was landing or departing were not immediately available, Federal Aviation Administration officials said.
