U.S. and Afghan forces killed six insurgents within hours after launching a large air assault in Kunar province, the military said Wednesday.

Operation Mountain Lion began with more than 2,500 coalition forces deploying in early morning air and ground assaults in the Pech River Valley, the military said in a statement.

U.S. soldiers and Marines form Task Force Spartan joined members of the Afghan National Army’s 203rd Corps in the joint operation aimed at destroying insurgent sanctuaries and supply routes, the statement said.

Coalition leaders said they expect the operation to continue “as long as necessary.”
