Even an appearance by the fire marshal didn't slow down rapper Kanye West's mega Grammy bash — an ode to music, booze, women and mayhem that surpassed other after-parties and raged into the wee hours Thursday.
"We're going to keep this party going. We're going to kill it!" West, who won three Grammys Wednesday night, yelled at 1:15 a.m. to the thunderous crowd packed into G.O.O.D Music's "Heavenly" themed shindig at West Hollywood's The Lot.
Just a half hour earlier, a fire marshall had closed the party's doors, keeping the affair intimate — well, for 3,000 people. Limos, Hummers and Rolls Royces were still pulling up and clogging nearby streets.
"They paid for a certain number of people to come, but triple the number showed up," said fire marshall Wallace Lajay.
But the attendees — fueled by cognac and champagne — didn't seem to mind the body heat.
Women clad in white bikinis and angel wings shimmied onstage as West joyously announced guest after guest, including 1960s spoken word artists the Last Poets and Grammy nominee Common, the party's co-host.
West's own mom hopped onstage to congratulate her son.
And Best New Artist winner John Legend was clearly enjoying himself — he even started to sing part of West's Grammy winning hit "Gold Digger," and then threw his microphone across the room to a friend.
Ten minutes away, at Sony BMG's outdoor party at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, another first-time Grammy winner, Kelly Clarkson, held court.
Chatting with friends and dancing to a DJ's pounding grooves, the former "American Idol" champion was the night's "it" girl — beating out favored pick Mariah Carey to snag the coveted Best Female Pop Performance award.
Guests reflecting on the surprise win voiced their support for the singer, who was criticized recently for abandoning her "Idol" roots.
"I think it's amazing. It validates the show," said "Idol" judge Randy Jackson. "I'm really happy for her. I think she's really over the moon because I think she thought she'd never win it."
Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl said the last time he saw Clarkson, she was rocking out on the side of the stage during one of the band's concerts in Dallas, Texas.
"Tonight I saw a glamorous Grammy winning diva wonder, but I think Kelly Clarkson at heart is a down-to-earth chick that likes to listen to rock and roll," he said.
A whiskey in hand, he humorously lamented his own Grammy losses.
"It felt awesome to be nominated for five Grammys, but it felt a little weird to lose every one of them," he said, just before high-fiving members of System of a Down for their Best Hard Rock Performance win.
Multiple Grammy nominee and "Idol" winner Fantasia snaked through the crowd with a seven-person posse in tow.
Other guests included a clean-cut looking Scott Weiland and actress Mischa Barton.
Clarkson's win, and Carey's lack of an eight-Grammy sweep, was also the subject of talk at other parties.
"I'm real proud of Kelly," "Idol" runner-up Bo Bice said outside of EMI's lavish bash at Paramount Studios.
"I definitely support her. She's done a great job of showing the music community she's about a lot more substance than just a pretty face, and a nice hind quarters," he said with a grin.
Inside the party, a circular rotating bar and white couches lent a crisp atmosphere to the converted sound stage. Guests feasted on green beans, beets and curried chicken and rice.
"I was very touched, and very happy that Kelly won," said Bonnie Raitt, who lost to Clarkson. "It was such a Cinderella story."
Paul McCartney, who lost out to U2 for Album of the Year, arrived later, surrounded by bodyguards.
At Warner Music's terrace party at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, Record of the Year winner Green Day made an appearance but dance diva Madonna was a no-show. Attendees were served freshly made miniature powdered doughnuts as they exited.
Across town, Universal Music's bash at the Palm Restaurant near downtown Los Angeles welcomed the likes of Jay-Z, Beyonce and Sheryl Crow, but Irish superstars U2 — who swept the Grammys with five surprise wins including Album of the Year and Song of the Year — made only a brief appearance before 11 p.m.
As the middle-aged rockers left, Kanye West's night was just beginning.
