I guess because it's my industry, I've been following closely these rumors that NBC's Katie Couric could jump to the anchor desk at the "CBS Evening News."
And that she could make as much as $20 million a year.
But lost in the debate over money and power and status and fame, is the undercurrent of digs at Katie.
I guess I'm biased. I'm a big fan of her work and her work ethic. I've seen both up close.
I also remember when she wasn't a huge deal. But she is a huge deal now and I guess because she is, the media loves to take pot shots at her.
One is that she's not ready for serious "anchor-dom" because of some of her not so serious work on the "Today Show."
Never mind that critics never raised this issue when Tom Brokaw ascended from the same show to broadcasting's version of the holy anchor trinity.
But the message now is Katie's "soft news."
And that maybe because she's interviewed Hollywood stars and dressed up as Donald Trump on Halloween... well, who could take her seriously?
Me, for one. And, I don't know, a nation for another?
Here's my message to those serious journalist critics: Get over yourselves. And get over old notions that journalists can't laugh, joke or poke fun of themselves. Or that they can't be human.
Because here's a news flash even you could comprehend: Anchors "are" human.
They do laugh. They do have personalities. They do have a broad range of emotions.
I've seen Katie deftly go from hard-hitting interviews with presidents to hard-boiled eggs in a cooking segment. Just like I've seen the executive dad come home and take his kid to soccer practice. Or that kid's soccer mom juggle that family's finances.
We can do a lot, us humans — us anchors too.
Maybe the reason a lot of you supercilious critics are bitching about Katie and what she "can" do is because of the simple fact you've looked at your own sorry super serious, arrogant lives and realized... what you can't.
And maybe the reason Katie's looking at some serious money now is because she never quite took herself so seriously in the first place.
