WASHINGTON – The IRS on Thursday extended tax deadlines for individuals and businesses in the path of Hurricane Wilma (search).
The extension gives taxpayers until Feb. 28, 2006, to file tax returns and submit tax payments, the same date granted to those affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
The order covers the 20 counties in Florida included in the Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster area.
The Internal Revenue Service will not charge interest or late penalties that would otherwise apply. Taxpayers with questions can use the special IRS disaster hotline at 1-866-562-5227.
Taxpayers in those areas should write "Hurricane Wilma" in red ink on forms filed with the IRS.
Individuals can deduct some hurricane losses not covered by insurance by filing amended 2004 tax returns or by claiming this year's losses when filing tax returns in the spring.
