The United States Coast Guard is our nation's most unique military branch. On any given day, the Coast Guard saves 10 lives, answers 192 calls for help and seizes about $10 million in illegal drugs. They also protect our 95-thousand miles of coastline and serve overseas to ensure the safety and freedom of others.
The Coast Guard and its predecessors have served as an armed force in every conflict since the founding of our Republic. For more than two centuries, whenever help was needed on or near the water, a "coastie" has valiantly answered the call, living up to their motto "Semper Paratus"--always ready.
In this gripping episode of “War Stories with Oliver North,” you'll hear the stories
of a coastguardsman who landed troops on D-Day at Normandy (search) and Iwo Jima (search). You’ll also hear an incredible tale of WWII survival from a coastguardsman who was aboard the U.S.S. Menges (search) when it was torpedoed by a German U-Boat in the Mediterranean. And finally, you’ll ride along as “War Stories” goes on patrol with the crew of Coast Guard Station New York and learn what they are accomplishing on the front lines of homeland security.
This is the story of the men and women who valiantly perform their duties and make the Coast Guard the oldest continuous seagoing service of our military.
