The blog is short today... I worked until 1 a.m. this morning — three straight hours on Hurricane Katrina (search) — and I am getting a slow start today. Slow start translates into short blog. Slow start also means something else... YOU do all the work today in the blog. I am posting your e-mails.
But before I post your e-mails, I thought you would like to hear about one I received over the weekend. I got an e-mail over the weekend that I wish I had saved. It was in reference to Miami resident Jayne Weintraub (and frequent guest on our show) who called into our show by cell phone on Thursday as Katrina — then Category 1 hurricane — pounded her home in South Florida. Jayne had no power, water was rising rapidly, trees were uprooted and power wires down... the viewer wrote, "With all that going on... and the fact that her cell phone still worked, I would like to know her cell phone service provider!" Me, too.
One other thing, during the three hours last night I received many, many e-mails from viewers desperate to hear about loved ones in the hurricane area. I felt terrible that I could not answer them during the show and worse that I have no answers for them.
Here are some e-mails:

Hi Greta,
Wish me luck! I just got the call to report to my armory in Alabama. We are to head into MS or LA to help those folks out. I'll keep you posted as I can.

From an AP Story on the hurricane:
"Artist Matt Rinard, who owns a business in the French Quarter (search), holed up on the fifth floor of a Canal Street hotel and watched the storm roll in... 'It's blustery. You can see the speed of it now, it's unbelievable,' he said. 'The power went out about an hour and a half ago and so now I'm just watching the occasional dumbass walking down Canal Street.'"
This is a case of the pot calling the kettle black. Rinard stays on Canal Street in NO with a CAT 5 hurricane headed his way, and he calls a guy walking Canal Street a dumbass?

Greta,
I work at a hotel in Marianna, Florida. We have a lot of people staying with us from New Orleans and other places. In the dining area where I work none of us could believe the good coverage FOX was giving while the storm was on land. Your coverage was a lot better than the Weather Channel. Thanks so much and keep up the good work. Let's all continue to pray for those people.
ANSWER: The crews and correspondents — and Shep — get all this credit. They fought the storm on the ground (not in the studio!)

My son works on a supply boat off of Louisiana, he has been contacted by a friend on another boat who has told him that Venice and Foushon, LA are gone! Grand Isle is between these two places. I can not confirm this!

Greta,
My name is Rachael Tackett and I live in Sunflower, Mississippi, which is in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. I just wanted to let you know the entire Mississippi Delta has no electricity and we are experiencing very horrible and intense wind. Trees are falling, roofs are being torn apart, the catfish ponds are not able to get oxygen, which will cause potentially millions of dollars farmers will lose. I have a generator at my home but most aren't this lucky. I just wanted to let you know how bad it was even here so you can report it.
Your fan,
Rachael Tackett

Hi Greta,
I'm watching from Cairns, Queensland Australia hoping that nothing like that ever happens up here in Cairns in the coming cyclone season.
Last nite, we heard FOX News talking to a guy who was going to stay embedded in New Orleans with all his animals on the third floor of a condo... do you know, have you heard how he is?
Regards,
Duncan MacDonald
ANSWER: I wish I knew... I missed that last night but if I get the answer, I will post it.

Biloxi, [bilŭk'sç] Please pass this on to Ms. Van Susteren and Ms. Henneberg.
We enjoy FOX News!

Greta,
I just wanted to let you know how to pronounce Biloxi: Buh-LUX-y.
I understand that you don’t know any better since you’re not from the great state of Mississippi. I just wanted to let you in on this matter. Hope all is well!
Just a good ole’ Mississippi boy who is maroon thru and thru,
Randy K. Reeves
ANSWER: I am very good at the Native American names for Wisconsin cities and counties... that is my home state. Shep should be doing these three hours... he is from Mississippi so he could do the names better!

I'm from Mississippi and have been helplessly watching the coverage. I have many friends and family there. There's not much I can do, but watch and wait. Here's one thing I can do. The name is pronounced "buh-lux-ee", not "bi-lox-ee." I know my fellow Southerners would appreciate hearing it correctly.

ANSWER: I am beginning to think maybe I don't know how to pronounce Biloxi.

Greta,
You keep saying bih-LOCKS-ee. It's bih-LUCKS-ee. Bih-LUCKS-ee!
Pass it on!

Greta,
No one has followed up on those people who remained on their shrimp boats during the hurricane. I'm just curious, were they right, by thinking they were safer in their shrimp boats, or are any missing? After seeing the part of an oilrig in a bridge, I'm curious to know if those in the shrimp boat survived the wrath of Katrina.
Thanks!
Mari Young
