FORT PAYNE, Ala. – A man has surrendered in the death of the Fort Payne (search) gas station owner who tried to stop a 52-dollar gasoline theft by grabbing onto a moving vehicle and was run over and killed, according to the Associated Press.
Husain "Tony" Caddi (search) was killed Friday in the drive-off at his Texaco station in Fort Payne.
Police Chief David Walker (search) said the driver, Alvin Dwight Benefield, 42, of Ider, surrendered to police Thursday. Benefield's 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee was seized by police. Charges against Benefield include manslaughter and theft of property. He was being held in jail without immediate bond.
Walker said Benefield gave police a statement, but details were not immediately released.
Meanwhile, the victim's son began a three-week journey to bury his father in his home country of Indonesia.
Amri Muharram said his father moved to Fort Payne from Philadelphia a few months ago because the people were friendly and the town had a natural beauty. He said he was satisfied with the probe into Caddi's death.
Muharram said he would bury his father's remains in Jakarta, Indonesia (search), in a traditional Muslim ceremony and spend three weeks there before returning to operate the gas station.
