WASHINGTON – Three more prisoners from the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay (search), Cuba, have been released to their home countries, the Pentagon announced Monday.
According to the Associated Press, a military tribunal found that two of them should no longer be considered enemy combatants, the report said. One was released to Yemen (search), the other to Tajikistan (search).
A separate military panel, which looks at the value of continuing to hold the prisoner, recommended the third for release to Iran (search).
The Pentagon did not identify the three further, citing security considerations.
The releases increase the number of detainees who have left Guantanamo to 245. Many were released outright; in 68 cases, they were transferred to the custody of their native governments.
The Pentagon said about 505 remain at the prison for terrorist suspects, said the Associated Press report.
