About 50 suspected Taliban (search) militants were killed in fighting with U.S. and Afghan forces in southern Afghanistan (search), a provincial governor said Tuesday.

The fighting late Monday in Uruzgan province's Dihrawud district came during an offensive against a rebel camp, which had been used as a base for attacks in neighboring areas, Gov. Jan Mohammed Khan (search) said.

About 25 suspected Taliban insurgents were captured during the clash, and Afghan forces were still finding the bodies of rebels at the scene of the fighting on Tuesday, he said.

A U.S. military spokeswoman said she had no details about the incident.

The U.S. military said in a statement late Monday that fighting in the same district had killed one American service member, one Afghan soldier and 11 rebels. Three U.S. troops were also wounded in the violence, it said.

U.S. fighter jets and attack helicopters had responded to a rebel attack on a patrol that sparked a gunbattle, the statement said. Eight insurgents were captured.
