A statewide search for a 12-year-old girl ended Thursday night after the man suspected of abducting her approached a stranger who recognized the pair and alerted authorities.

Police in Tracy, Calif., arrested the 21-year-old man on suspicion of kidnapping.

Authorities said Jose Tomas took Juana Martinez from her home in Stockton (search) late Wednesday afternoon. He was staying at the house and apparently got in an argument with the girl's father before he fled with her.

Stockton police canceled the statewide Amber Alert (search) they had issued following the abduction. A California Highway Patrol spokesman said police in Tracy credited the alert with giving the person who called them the information needed to recognize the pair.
