Students in the Berkeley (search), California, school district may be seeing some benefit to an ongoing teachers' contract dispute.

Teachers have decided they won't assign written homework, under a job action aimed at getting a cost-of-living increase. After two years without a raise, the teachers say they'll work strictly during their assigned hours.

That means no grading homework on their own time. The action has also meant the cancellation of a black history event, and a science fair had to be staffed by parents.

The schools superintendent is expressing sympathy for the teachers but says there's no money for raises. She blames Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (search) for not providing enough funding.

But a Schwarzenegger spokesman says the governor has promised that the bulk of new funding in next year's budget will go to education.
