Islamic militants detonated a bomb near a Jewish settlement in the southern Gaza Strip (search) on Wednesday, killing an Israeli civilian and wounding three soldiers, the Israeli army said.

Islamic Jihad (search), a violent group that has carried out dozens of attacks on Israeli targets, claimed responsibility for the attack. It said two of its members were killed in an ensuing gunbattle.

Israeli military officials said the explosion went off near a military vehicle near the settlement of Morag. They said one civilian in the area was killed in the blast and three soldiers were wounded.

The army had no further information, saying an investigation was continuing.
