NEW YORK – It's not the North Pole, but a sea of Santas flooded the Europapark in Rust, Germany, on Saturday in an effort to break the Guinness World Record (search) for largest gathering of St. Nicks. A reported 2,797 red-suited impersonators gathered in the southwestern city to kick off the winter season.
The record has not been broken since Dec. 7, 2002, when 2,685 costumed Santas (search), wearing red suits with matching hats and fake white beards, paraded down the streets of Bralanda, Sweden.
The festive hopefuls may have to wait until after the holidays to find out if they will be awarded the title for having the most Santas in one place at one time. Guinness World Records receives around 65,000 title-breaking attempts each year, and the qualifying process takes an average of four to six weeks, according to the company's Web site.
