If you voted for President Bush, you are stupid. That's what many in the European media are saying. That's what many apoplectic U.S. liberals are saying.
Some New York Times columnists are using words like "liar" and "corrupt" about the Bush administration. They call those who voted for him "stupid" and "ignorant." they also say this is a divided nation and the president needs to "reach out" to heal the rift.
Let me show you a map. It was published Thursday in USA Today. It is the presidential vote, county-by-county — not state-by-state. It is mostly red, which represents those counties in which a majority voted for the president. The small patches of blue represent counties where the majority voted for John Kerry (search). When you look at the election results this way, it looks like a mostly united nation.
What those who didn't vote for the president mean by "healing the rift" is that in order to win their approval, he has to adopt their views. Does that make sense, since it was his views a record number of voters seem to like?
At his news conference Thursday, Mr. Bush (search) said: "I feel it is necessary to move an agenda that I told the American people I would move … I made it clear what I intend to do as the president … and the people made it clear what they wanted; now let's work together … let me put it to you this way: I earned capital in the campaign, political capital, and now I intend to spend it. It is my style."
The left has gone nuts because, having lived by the courts instead of the voters, they are about to die by the courts. This country has moved on from the '60s mentality of free love, no personal responsibility or accountability, high taxes, big government and overregulation of business.
This is the dawn of a new age and its name isn't "Aquarius."
In war, the defeated side surrenders to the victor. If the left wants to heal the divide, let them move in the president's direction for a change. And if they are in doubt about that direction, they can consult people who live in what the elites consider flyover country: the good people in those red counties who have had enough of the left and said so on election day. The nation isn't growing more divided. It is growing more conservative and republican.
And a lot of those people think they're pretty intelligent.
