A Tennessee prison inmate and the guard accused of helping him escape surrendered to authorities Friday after police found the pair at a motel in Texas.

Edward McDaniel (search) escaped Saturday from a maximum-security prison hospital in Nashville. He was recaptured several hours before dawn Friday, along with corrections officer Vicki Sanford, who is accused of giving McDaniel a guard uniform and helping him slip out during a shift change.

The two were found at an El Paso motel, said Jennifer Johnson, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (search).

McDaniel, 37, was serving a 20-year sentence for attempted murder in the 1996 shooting of a sheriff's deputy. Sanford, 51, had worked at the prison sporadically for about two years.
