A boat capsized in heavy winds on a river in northern Vietnam (search), killing 16 people, an official said Saturday.

The motor boat was ferrying 19 people on the Bang River (search) in Hoanh Bo district, Quang Ninh province, when it overturned Thursday, an official from the provincial waterway traffic police said on condition of anonymity.

Only three women swam to safety or were rescued by villagers, he said.

Thirteen women and three men drowned, including the pilot and his 9-year-old son, the officer said. The driver's mother was also among the dead.

Quang Ninh province is about 90 miles east of Hanoi.
