WASHINGTON – President Bush on Wednesday nominated Keith Starrett (search), a judge on the 14th Circuit Court District of Mississippi since 1992, to be U.S. district judge for the Southern District of the state.
If confirmed by the Senate, Starrett would replace Charles W. Pickering (search). Stymied in getting some of his choices past Democratic opponents, Bush bypassed the Senate in January and gave Pickering a temporary appointment on the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals (search) in New Orleans.
Starrett is a native of McComb, Miss. He attended Millsaps College, received a bachelor's degree from Mississippi State University and earned his law degree from the University of Mississippi School of Law.
He worked as an attorney with Statham & Watkins in the 1970s and was in private practice from 1980 to 1984, during which he served part-time for one year as assistant district attorney for the 14th circuit court. From 1984 to 1986, Starrett was employed at Starrett & Honea; he was in private practice from 1986 until he became a judge.
Starrett is married with three children.
