A flier for the chairman of the House panel that funds the Homeland Security Department (search) announced a political fund-raiser in Las Vegas the weekend of Sept. 11, the third anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Questioned about the flier, an aide to Republican Rep. Hal Rogers (search) of Kentucky said Thursday that it was a mistake, and the fund-raiser will be held the following weekend.

"We're not having a fund-raiser on Sept. 11," said Will Smith, Rogers' chief of staff.

Larry Noble, head of the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics (search), said choosing a date that was "seared in our consciousness" would be out of the ordinary.

Rogers, in his fifth term, is unopposed in his bid for re-election. The fund-raiser in Las Vegas is to benefit his leadership political action committee. Guests during the event will stay at the exclusive Bellagio Hotel and be feted with cocktails, brunch, golf and other entertainment, according to the invitation recently sent to Rogers' supporters.
