MIAMI – Complimented on her choice of a husband, Teresa Heinz Kerry said Tuesday she married well — "both times."
The wife of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (search) made the comments during a three-day campaign trip through Florida in which she praised her husband's economic proposals, including an increase in the federal minimum wage to $7 an hour by 2007.
Heinz Kerry, the heir to the $500 million Heinz fortune, said her work on charitable causes in her home town of Pittsburgh helped her gain insight to economic development issues. Her first husband, Sen. John Heinz (search), R-Pa., died in a 1991 plane crash.
Among those in attendance was former Rep. Carrie Meek, mother of current Rep. Kendrick Meek, D-Fla., who complimented Heinz Kerry on her life decisions.
"I'd just like to say to you — you married well," Meek said. Heinz Kerry married the Massachusetts senator in 1995.
"Both times," Heinz Kerry responded to chuckles. "Both times."
