The Hunt Continues for a Serial Rapist in Miami

GRETA VAN SUSTEREN, HOST:  Tonight, a serial rapist is on the loose in Miami, and police need your help.  He's assaulting victims as young as 7-years-old.

Chief Jim Loftus of the Miami-Dade Criminal Investigation Division joins us from Miami.

Welcome, Chief.

CHIEF JIM LOFTUS, MIAMI-DADE COUNTY POLICE:  Good evening.

VAN SUSTEREN:  Chief, what can you tell me about the man you're looking for?

LOFTUS:  We're looking for a black male subject, 20- to 30-years-of-age, 5'6" to 5'10", 120 to 160 pounds.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  Now is this -- how many rapes is he a suspect in right now?

LOFTUS:  Well, what we know to be sure is that five cases are linked by forensic evidence.  We have another nine cases where there are striking similarities in M.O.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  And the ones where you've identified -- is that with like DNA evidence so that it's -- you're a hundred percent certain on those?

LOFTUS:  That's correct.  It's with DNA evidence.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  What -- what are the areas -- is he -- is he targeting children?

LOFTUS:  Yes, he has.  Our age range in victims is from 7 to actually 37 years of age.  Some of those are actual victims, and there are intended victims included in there as well.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  For the under -- aged 10 -- under age 10, how many victims do you have, do you think?

LOFTUS:  Under age of 10 -- at age 10 or under, we have three.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  What's the M.O.?  Does he have one distinct M.O.?

LOFTUS:  He's a subject who traditionally covers his face.  He traditionally covers his hands.  He's a cat burglar.  He enters through windows or doors, sometimes unlocked.  He enters between the times of generally 2:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

VAN SUSTEREN:  Is there a particular area of Miami that seems to be targeted?

LOFTUS:  Greta, that's one of our problems.  Our target area is really -- essentially, it's 50 square miles.  It's from 62nd Street in Northwest Miami to our county line from Northwest 2nd Avenue to Northwest 37th Avenue, an area five miles wide and 10 miles long.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  Since he's a cat burglar coming into the house, are his hands covered, or is he leaving prints behind?

LOFTUS:  His hands are covered.  There have been no prints to this point.

VAN SUSTEREN:  Anything distinctive about his voice?

LOFTUS:  No.  There is nothing distinctive about his voice.  He does not speak with an accent, though.

VAN SUSTEREN:  And, of course, that's the -- recently, the police force picked up a man who was a serial rapist who had a distinctive voice, right, not to be confused with that one?

LOFTUS:  That's correct.  Not to be confused with that case.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  What is it that you're telling the community to do?

LOFTUS:  Well, through our media push, which we have been doing for approximately seven months now, we're alerting the media through flyers that are being mailed out tomorrow, 54,000 flyers, to the target area to certainly be aware of a person or looking for a person that they might see in this flyer, bearing in mind that this composite has been put together with the information from one of our victims and one victim only.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right.  Well...

LOFTUS:  We want people not...

VAN SUSTEREN:  Go ahead.

LOFTUS:  We don't want people to absolutely focus on those characteristics to the exclusion of other people who may be acting suspiciously within the area.

VAN SUSTEREN:  All right, Chief.  Well, we put the number up for the viewers.  If anyone has any information, they need to call that tip line and help you out as soon as possible.
