Today:

• The U.S. military grounds all daytime operations by CH-47 (search) Chinook helicopters after Iraqi insurgents downed one yesterday, killing 16 soldiers and wounding 20 others.

• After days of devastation, firefighters, aided by cooler, calmer weather, began getting the upper hand on most of the California wildfires over the weekend. Many California evacuees head back into their neighborhoods to see if their houses survived.

• As Scott Peterson's (search) preliminary hearing begins it's second week, his defense team takes their best shot at that controversial strand of hair found on his boat.

FNC correspondent Claudia Cowan will update us live from Modesto, Calif.

Could the hair have been tampered with? Is the DNA evidence crucial to the prosecution's case?

We'll ask forensic scientist Dr. Larry Kobilinsky.

All of this... and more on Studio B With Shepard Smith at 3 p.m. ET.
