And now the most engrossing two minutes in television, the latest from the wartime grapevine:
Whose Message Is It?
We're just now finding out some things about this past weekend's anti-war protest in Washington that the mass media didn't include in their accounts. One speaker, a rap musician, chanted "F Bush," but he chose to use the full four-letter word. The crowd then chanted the same.
One protester, a high school English teacher from Virginia, held a sign saying -- "U.S. troops out of Iraq. Bring them home now." But when asked by a reporter for Salon.com whether he thinks the troops should in fact come home now, the teacher said he wasn't sure, adding that he -- "would hate for the Bush administration to halfway fix things and then leave."
So then why carry the sign? He says -- "I didn't even look at it. I was just waving it."
Newspaper Contradictions
Republican Congressman George Nethercutt of Washington state is running ads in Seattle's major newspapers today complaining he was unfairly quoted in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer two weeks ago.
The newspaper quoted Nethercutt on postwar Iraq as follows: "It is a better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day." This is what Nethercutt actually said -- "It's a bigger and better and more important story than losing a couple of soldiers every day, which heaven forbid, is awful."
While the newspaper did add that Nethercutt said he did not want any more soldiers to die, Nethercutt says the paper tried to make him seem indifferent to the loss of American soldiers. Post-Intelligencer editor David McCumber said the Congressman, "was quoted accurately and within context...and that's sort of the beginning and end of it."
Lieberman's Fight Against Global Warming
A team of supporters for Democratic Presidential Candidate Joe Lieberman (search) -- out on the streets of Concord in the key election state of New Hampshire -- was promoting what they said was Lieberman's fight against global warming (search). This as snowflakes fell on their shoulders.
A bystander, quoted on the New Hampshire Public Radio's web site, shouted to the team "It's snowing!"...to which one supporter insisted..."That's because of global warming!"
Illegal Bodily Functions?
Advocates for the homeless are outraged that the city of Los Angeles has outlawed urinating or defecating in public. Bilal Ali, a member of the Los Angeles Community Action Network, says, "criminalizing the behavior of people utilizing their bodily functions is appalling."
But the City Council says the law is necessary because human waste has become a bigger problem. One problem, according to the L.A. Times, is that public facilities are often occupied by people having sex.
