And now the most compelling two minutes in television, the latest from the wartime grapevine:
American Majority Says War in Iraq, “Right Thing To Do’
A new FOX News Opinion Dynamics poll out today shows that, after weeks of bad news and Democratic criticism on Iraq, most Americans still say…by a margin of 62 to 33 percent…that going into Iraq was the right thing to do.
In addition, 54 percent of Americans say they approve of the job President Bush is doing in Iraq. A similar number, 58 percent, say the U.S. should do and spend whatever is necessary in the war on terror.
But only 46 percent of Americans say they approve of President Bush's request for $87 billion to sustain the war on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Al Jazeera Aiding Al Qaeda?
Al-Jazeera reporter Tayssir Alouni…who has been under house arrest in Spain for allegedly giving money to Al-Qaeda (search)…has now been thrown in a high-security prison, charged not only for assisting members of Al-Qaeda but for being one himself.
The Judge says Tayssir carried out "coordination" for Al-Qaeda and is a, "qualified militant of the organization." Al-Jazeera, however, says Alouni was just doing his job and is demanding his release.
Meanwhile in Iraq, two other Al-Jazeera journalists have been taken into custody by the U.S. military in connection with the death of an American soldier in Baghdad yesterday. Sources who requested anonymity say the al-Jazeera crew may have known beforehand about yesterday's deadly bomb in Baghdad and was on scene as it exploded.
Journalistic Investigation May Lead to Jail
Federal authorities are considering whether to file criminal charges against several ABC News employees, including reporter Brian Ross, who smuggled nearly 15 pounds of depleted uranium into the United States from Indonesia.
ABC News says it was all a journalistic investigation to, "test the system" in the interest of national security. But officials say the reporters seem to have broken several federal laws, including falsely declaring the contents of their luggage.
And what's more, officials say, the system was in fact successful because depleted uranium is harmless and should not have been stopped.
