There’s a big cover story in Time magazine this week that asks the question, are the Saudis America's No. 1 enemy in the war on terror?
The answer is yes, according to Time, and then no.
How could it be both?
Time reports accurately that the Wahhabi (search) sect of Saudi Arabia -- the brand of Islam the kingdom was founded on hundreds of years ago -- has been spreading hate around the world with billions of dollars is Saudi oil money. Spreading it to Chechnya, to Pakistan, to Indonesia, to Bosnia and Kosovo. And from these Saudi sponsored schools, we have reaped a harvest of terrorists and America haters.
Now Time also reports that the Saudis are working hard to ratchet back the support Saudi citizens are giving to militant, intolerant Wahhabism, to reduce the possibility of terrorism continuing.
So, who do we believe? The old Saudis -- the ones who promoted and spread terror around the world -- or the new Saudis -- who realize how the hate they foster could and would return to haunt them.
I hate to be a pessimist, but I'm going with the old Saudis. They have spread the hate too far and too wide and -- in the old saying -- the genie is out of the bottle.
They are going to be problems for years and years.
That's My Word.
